Chris Baxter's Road to Wings

Thanks for checking out my site.  I've decided to keep an online journal of my experiences over the course of the next year and a half so that my friends and family can keep up with me, even when it seems that I've dropped off the face of the earth.  I'll try to keep this site simple to use and hopefully I'll have time to keep it up to date.  Anything that is underlined in the text is a link that will explain what it is that I'm talking about.  Sometimes it's easy to get caught up in all that military jargon.  To the left is the navigation menu.  As I progress further along in my training, more links will appear. So the link at the bottom of the menu will be the most recent phase of my training, so feel free to check periodically.

For anyone who's stumbled on this site in search of information on becoming an Air Force Pilot or for anyone who's just curious, here's what I've done so far to be selected for pilot training.  I enlisted in the Tennessee Air National Guard six years ago as a loadmaster on C-141s and then transitioned to the C-5 after the C-141's retirement from service.  During these past six years I attended college at the University of Memphis which the National Guard was kind enough to help pay for.  I graduated college in spring of 2004 .  Before graduation I had to take some tests required by the pilot interview board.  The first test was the BAT which stands for Basic Attributes Test.  It was basically a hand eye coordination test that was run on an a very out dated desk top PC.  After the BAT was the AFOQT.  This is the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test which is required to be taken by everyone who is wanting to be a commissioned officer, not just someone who wants to fly.  It was like taking a grown up version of the ACT or SAT we all took in high school, except it had a few more areas of study to it like aviation knowledge and navigation.

This plane rocked!  Too bad it's retired.

The latest and greatest for the Memphis National Guard.
